Avoid Using Social Media for Link Building Only

Doing social media for the sole purpose of building backlinks is just plain bad strategy. Social media links are usually “nofollowed,” meaning the developer has inserted a “tag” in the underlying code, so they pass along no “link juice.” Social media linking is about connecting with people more than just “link building,” though the possibility of social media playing a deeper role in search engine rankings is rising extremely fast.

If you want your rankings to go up, use social media to spread your cool content and to build relationships.

Getting your cool content on the following sites can make it go viral, which can result in thousands of backlinks, some good and some bad, but lots of links just the same.

Some great places to spread content:

  1. Facebook
  2. YouTube
  3. Twitter
  4. Google+
  5. LinkedIn
  6. Reddit
  7. Digg.com
  8. StumbleUpon
  9. Tumblr
  10. Delicious
  11. Pinterest
  12. Instagram

Although many top SEOs firmly believe that social shares such as tweets, likes, and plusses will soon affect rankings, at the moment “regular” links are what we know have a significant direct impact. Since this could change, you must start building social connections now.

Do you feel social is vital for ranking?
