Understanding the basics of artificial intelligence for marketing and SEO

What is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is essentially when a computer does things a human would normally do.

John McCarthy coined the term “artificial intelligence” in 1955 and he died at 84 in 2011.

In a nice intro to AI John says “It is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs.”

There are many different types of artificial intelligence including machine learning, natural language processing, Neural Networks and more. The above is a great introductory video about what artificial intelligence is.

Google’s artificial intelligence algorithm RankBrain used to impact only around 15% of searches but now Google says that it is involved at some level on every search.

Voice only devices like Amazon Echo and Google Home will be in 30 million homes by the end of the year. There is only one result spoken back to you when you ask a search query to one of these little robots.

If you want to be featured in these voice only results, you need to please the artificial intelligence algorithms that are used by these devices. Amazon Echo has its own artificial intelligence but also draws on Google’s AI when determining what results to come back with.

Artificial intelligence is definitely already affecting search engine optimization and so it’s important to start to understand it and how it will impact our lives more broadly.

I hope you enjoy this video and keep an eye out for more articles and blog posts about artificial intelligence, as it relates to Marketing and SEO.
